What we should know about RADON GAS!

1) What is Radon

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas produced by the breakdown of uranium in soil and rock.
It:

  • Is colourless, odourless, and tasteless
  • Enters homes through foundation cracks, slab joints, sump pits, and service penetrations
  • Accumulates in lower levels (basements are highest risk)

Radon is the #1 cause of lung cancer among non-smokers in Canada.

2) Calgary Is a High Radon Area

Health Canada classifies much of Alberta — including Calgary — as high radon potential.

Key facts:

  • Roughly 1 in 6 homes in Alberta test above the recommended limit.
  • Radon levels vary house to house, even on the same street.
  • Newer homes are not immune.

There is no “safe” neighbourhood assumption.

3) Acceptable Levels in Canada

According to Health Canada:

  • Guideline level: 200 Bq/m³
  • If above 200 Bq/m³ → mitigation recommended
  • If above 600 Bq/m³ → urgent action

Testing must be:

  • Long-term (minimum 3 months)
  • Done during heating season (Oct–April ideal)

Short-term tests (48 hours) are less reliable.

The Digital Radon Detector that I use in my home can be purchased here .
